most of the amount provided for new roads in the New

Territories. $4,300 has been inserted for the first

18

section of a road to open up residential sites along the

northern slopes of Victoria Peak.

The amounts included under

"Miscellaneous" for Mongkoktsui Breakwater and for the

was

deepening of Causeway Bay, sanction for which(conveyed in

Your Lordship's Despatch No. 172 of 7th. August last, are

as much as it is expected can be spent on these works.

The additional dues levied on Shipping to provide part

funds for construction of the former are expected to yield

$93,000 during the year.

I have estimated $21,400 for a

resumption for a public road through Marine Lot No. 29

from Queen's Road East to Praya East, hatched yellow on

the enclosed plan. Space for the scavenging lanes coloured

blue will be bought and paid for out of the previous item

"Compensation". The construction of a thoroughfare and

scavenging lanes comprise the Government's share in a

scheme for the rebuilding of a large portion of the lot

which will be carried out, as it has been initiated, by

private enterprise. The whole scheme will have the effect

of considerably improving the neighbourhood both from the

point

onclosure 8.
